Illinois woman left paralyzed after drunk driving car accident

Many motorists are aware that it's not safe to drink and drive. An Illinois woman and her friends were injured in a car accident involving a drunk driver earlier this year. One of those involved in the accident died, while the woman is confined to a wheelchair.

Five months ago, the woman and her friends were on their way back from attending a party. Before they could reach their destination, a catastrophic accident occurred when a drunk driver apparently ran a red light at 90 mph and struck their vehicle. The woman was transported to the hospital, where it was determined that she suffered serious injuries to her hips and spine and was also paralyzed. Tragically, her 22-year-old male friend did not survive after he suffered a stroke and passed away.

Months after the accident, the woman found herself needing assistance with everything, including showering and going to the bathroom. Since someone had to be with her at all times of the day, she was required to complete her last year of college at her parents' house. At a press conference, the woman spoke about the effects of how drunk driving has affected her life and took someone else's. Authorities also attended the press conference and added that they are expecting to crack down on drunk drivers.

The 37-year-old drunk driver recently pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated driving while intoxicated at the time of the car accident. At this time, she is out on bond, but could face up to 14 years in prison. Not only does she face criminal penalties, but she could also face civil ones as well if the deceased victim's family should decide to litigate a wrongful death claim for damages in an Illinois civil courtroom. The injured woman also retains similar rights to pursue a personal injury claim for financial relief as she continues to recuperate.
