Jury awards $16M in slip and fall case

The family of a 69-year-old woman recently learned a jury awarded their loved one $16 million related to debilitating injuries she suffered in a slip and fall accident. Unfortunately, news of the multi-million dollar settlement was bittersweet as the woman is no longer able to communicate or take care of herself.

The woman’s devastating injuries resulted when she slipped and fell down a flight of stairs. The now 69-year-old wife, mother and grandmother was headed home from work in 2008 when she slipped near a subway entrance and fell down the stairs. Evidence presented during the trial proved the woman’s slip and subsequent fall were caused by a wide crack in the cement near the top of the entrance to the subway stairs.

After the accident, the woman was diagnosed as suffering a broken hip as well as a traumatic brain injury. Doctors were unable to control the bleeding in the woman’s brain and her condition quickly deteriorated. Today, the once active mother of four is confined to a wheelchair and is not able to talk or perform basic everyday tasks. She requires round-the-clock assistance, care and supervision which her family currently provides.

This case is a tragic example of the serious and devastating injuries that can result from a slip and fall accident. In cases where an individual falls and hits their spine, neck or head; debilitating injuries including those to the spinal cord or brain may occur. Many slip and fall accidents occur in public places or on the premise of a business. In such cases, an individual may choose to seek the advice of an attorney who can help determine whether legal action is appropriate.
