Central Illinois mother, young child killed in fatal crash

A tragic crash on Aug. 26 took the life of a Central Illinois woman and her 6-year-old daughter. Authorities say the collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 24 and Cummings Lane in Washington, Illinois, shortly after 5 p.m., when a teenage driver in a Ford Mustang ran a red light. He struck the side of the Chevrolet Impala being driven by the 46-year-old woman less than a mile from the family's home.

Two other vehicles, a pickup truck and a Jeep Grand Cherokee got caught up in the collision. Another car, which was between those two vehicles, was hit by flying debris.

The Washington woman died at the scene of the crash. Her daughter was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, where she was placed in pediatric intensive care. She died later in the evening.

The teen who ran the red light in a Mustang was reportedly taken to St. Francis, where he reportedly underwent surgery. His passenger was treated at the hospital and released. The other drivers did not appear to have been seriously injured.

Since the crash, investigators say that it was precipitated by a medical event involving the teen driver. They have not said what that was. However, social media posts have indicated that the teen, who is a minor, had a seizure before he drove through the red light into the intersection. Tazewell County prosecutors have not indicated whether they intend to pursue charges against him. He was cited at the time of the crash.

When there are unique situations involving an at-fault driver such as a medical condition or age, experienced Peoria personal injury attorneys can advise victims and surviving family members of their legal options for civil action.
