There are many reasons for auto-pedestrian accidents

As a pedestrian, you understand the importance of avoiding trouble as you walk down the sidewalk and/or cross the street.

Unfortunately, there are times when a driver doesn't think twice about pedestrians. As a result, this person is in position to cause a serious accident in which a pedestrian could be injured or even killed.

Generally speaking, drivers are expected to exercise reasonable care. Here are some of the many factors that can contribute to an auto-pedestrian accident:

-- Speeding or other forms or reckless driving

-- Distracted driving, such as texting or talking on a cellphone

-- Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

-- Failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks

-- Failing to signal before making a turn

-- Disregarding traffic conditions

-- Disregarding weather conditions, such as rain or strong winds

A driver who makes one of these mistakes greatly increases the chance of causing an accident, either with another vehicle or a pedestrian.

If you're involved in an auto-pedestrian accident, it's important to take these three steps:

-- Contact an ambulance for immediate medical assistance. If you're seriously injured, somebody may need to do this for you.

-- Follow the guidance of your medical team.

-- Learn more about the cause of the accident.

The third step will come about once you've recovered to the point that you can investigate what happened. If you find that the driver was negligent, you may be in position to file a lawsuit. This could be the one step that allows you to receive compensation for your injuries and other damages.
