What steps can you take to prevent being hit by a car?

As a pedestrian, you realize that you may be walking in close proximity to motor vehicles on a regular basis.

While some people are always thinking about the things they can do to avoid an accident, others never let this enter their mind.

Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of people are killed and injured in car-pedestrian accidents every year. For this reason, you need to take as many steps as you can to avoid a similar fate. Some of things you can do include:

  • Only cross the street at a designated crosswalk, if available. If not, you should cross at an intersection.
  • Increase your visibility through any means available to you, such as by carrying a flashlight or wearing reflective clothing. This is even more important during nighttime hours.
  • Walk on a sidewalk, not the street, if possible. If this is not possible, always walk on the shoulder of the road and into traffic.
  • Avoid distractions that will make it difficult to see what's going on around you. For example, you should not use your cellphone to text while you're walking. Doing this will take your attention away from the road in front of you.

Even if you take these important steps, a vehicle could still strike you at some point. If this happens, do the following:

  • Call for immediate medical help (or have somebody do this for you)
  • Follow the guidance of your medical team, including the long term treatment schedule
  • Learn more about the cause of the accident
  • Learn more about your legal rights

While it's critical to take all these steps, keep this in mind: Your health is more important than anything else. You'll have time in the future for other details, such as seeking compensation from the negligent party.

Since a personal injury claim is so complex, you should not hesitate to speak with a qualified attorney. This one step can help you better understand your situation and put you on the path to receiving the compensation you deserve.

With each passing day, you'll continue to recover from your injuries. Furthermore, if you receive compensation, you'll have money to help pay for medical expenses and other damages.
