Fatal Illinois car accident leads to a lawsuit

Car accidents that take the lives of loved ones are particularly difficult to understand. If the accident happened because of law enforcement negligence, it only adds to the suffering of those left behind. One Illinois family has filed a legal action after a loved one died in a Chicago car accident involving local police officers.

The car accident resulted in the death of a 32-year-old off-duty police officer and a 27-year-old woman. Reportedly, the accident occurred when the off-duty officer sped through an intersection at a "high rate of speed" and struck the 27-year-old's vehicle. The report also indicates that an unmarked police car appeared to be pursuing the off-duty officer.

The lawsuit cites wrongful death and excessive force, targeting the estate of the deceased police officer, the city of Chicago and the unnamed driver operating the unmarked police car. It alleges that the police department does not properly train its officers about when to stop a pursuit. The lawsuit also alleges that the department does not provide adequate supervision of its staff in regards to "dangerous tactics or behaviors."

Regarding the unnamed police officer pursuing the off-duty cop, he or she is named in the suit for an allegedly "reckless pursuit." The lawsuit also claims the pursuing officer did not have probable cause to pursue the off-duty officer's vehicle.

The fatal car accident is still under investigation, but if the allegations are proven true, it indicates a potentially huge problem with the city's police force. No one should be above the law when it comes to operating vehicles correctly. Personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits are the victim's best tools for justice in these kinds of car accidents.
