Use these tips to avoid injuries in the construction industry

Most safety experts agree that jobs in the construction industry are some of the most potentially dangerous careers available in America. It is always good to see new homes and new commercial structures appearing in Illinois because it means the state is growing and thriving. However, new growth sometimes means more accidents in the construction field.

While it is a comfort to know that workers' compensation is available to help overcome the financial hardships that go hand-in-hand with workplace accidents, it is always better to avoid a work-related accident altogether. Using the tips in the following sections can help you and your coworkers stay safe on the job.

  • Loading and unloading equipment: When it is time to load or unload a piece of heavy machinery from its transport vehicle, practice caution at all times to prevent a rollover or other loss of control.
  • Getting on or off your equipment: It may seem like a simple process to get on or off a piece of equipment. However, this is when most construction accidents occur. Follow a regimented guideline each time you get on or off and never be tempted to rush.
  • Obstructions: Overhead or buried obstructions can be fatal. Make sure you know where overhead obstructions are at all times and make certain your team knows where gas lines and other utilities are buried in your work area.
  • Tipping equipment: The construction industry utilizes a variety of machinery, all of which can tip over and cause severe injuries. The best way to remain safe while operating equipment is to use safety belts, even if you are only using the machine for a moment.

To those who have already suffered a work injury, please understand that it is your right to file a workers' compensation claim. If you need help with your claim, consider meeting with an attorney.
