Man responsible for fatal crash out of jail on reduced bond

Last month, a mother and her three young sons died because of a senseless car accident in Illinois. The mom was only 29 years old and her sons were 6 years old, 4 years old and 1 year old. The mother and the youngest child died at the scene of the car accident. The two other children passed away within a few days of the crash.

According to news sources, a 25-year-old man caused the car accident. Reportedly, the man was driving 75 mph inside a 55 mph speed zone when he ran through a stop sign and struck the family's vehicle. Officials reported no indication that the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the car accident. However, they did not offer any comments on whether texting could have played a role in the crash.

The driver was charged with several offenses including 14 counts of reckless homicide. He also faces charges related to the reckless death of an unborn child. The driver initially received a traffic citation but prosecutors dismissed the ticket later. This happened so that prosecutors could file the more serious charges.

Last Friday, the man was released on a $250,000 bond. The original bond was set at $1 million, but the man's lawyer argued that this amount was "excessive" as his client was not a flight risk or a threat to public safety. Prosecutors argued that the higher bond amount was warranted because of the defendant's previous history of recklessly violating traffic laws.

Traffic laws are in place to protect law-abiding citizens. Even the most innocent of violations can result in tragic car accidents like this one. It is good to see Illinois law enforcement personnel and courts take steps to punish those who fail to abide by the law.
