Preventing tiredness at the wheel

Driving requires a large amount of concentration, especially when operating a large truck and driving long distances. It's a common issue, but it can be largely ignored as something that is the cause of countless deaths each year. It has been reported that in up to one-quarter of all highway vehicle accidents, driver fatigue played a significant role.

This blog will provide a brief overview into how driver fatigue can be prevented, and what to do if you are concerned about bringing safety issues up with your employer.

Common factors that influence driver tiredness

The most crucial factor when ensuring alertness in driving is whether the driver has had a good amount of quality sleep before driving. This should be a truck driver's first priority before getting in his or her truck each day. You must also make sure that any previous consumption of alcohol or medication is not contributing to your tiredness.

Although many factors can be controlled, it's important to remember that simply boredom after spending a long amount of time on a monotonous highway can lead to tiredness and fatigue. You should make sure that frequent breaks are taken, and that when doing a job, make sure that the time frame for many breaks is factored in. Your employer has an obligation to put safety first, and should not be pressuring drivers into putting in overtime on the road if it is compromising their safety or the safety of others.

If you have concerns about driver fatigue when it comes to truck driving, or if you think that your working demands are putting your safety at risk, you should speak to a trusted legal advisor for guidance.
