As a bicycle commuter, you understand the many challenges of this mode of transportation.

Although there are risks, such as being part of an accident with a motor vehicle, you also understand the many benefits of riding your bicycle to and from work or school.

Here are some of the many safety tips that bicycle commuters can follow:

  • Make yourself visible. There are many ways of doing this, such as by wearing reflective clothing, which is even more important if riding your bike when it’s dark outside.
  • Wear protective gear. You hope that you are never part of a bicycle accident, but if you are the right gear can be the difference between a serious injury and minor scrapes.
  • Avoid the door zone. This is a top hazard of riding a bicycle in the city. If a door opens into your path of travel, it’s possible that you could collide with it head on.
  • Always pass behind pedestrians. When you do this, it’s easier to avoid a situation in which a person walks in front of your bike.
  • Use bike lanes when available. These aren’t always available to you, but you should keep your eyes open nonetheless. A designated lane is often the safest place for bicyclists.

These are just a few of the many tips you should follow as a bicycle commuter. With these in mind, you’ll soon realize that it’s easier to remain safe every time you jump in the saddle.

If you ever find yourself part of a bicycle accident, such as one in which you are struck by a motor vehicle, don’t move from the scene. Call 911 for help and wait for an ambulance to arrive.

Once you receive treatment, you can then turn your attention to your legal rights and the possibility of obtaining compensation for your injuries and other damages.
