Residents concerned after second fatal pedestrian accident

Within the first three days of October, a 67-year-old man died in a pedestrian accident that occurred in Champaign, Illinois. Reports indicate that the accident happened at around 8 p.m., as the man was crossing the road near Bradley and Willis Avenue.

The driver that struck the man remained on scene and did not appear be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Reports also indicate that the driver did not appear to be distracted when the pedestrian accident occurred.

Less than a year ago, another person perished in a similar accident in nearly the same spot. Now, the community is expressing concern about the intersection where these fatal accidents occurred.

The man who witnessed the latest accident and called 911 said that there is insufficient lighting at the spot where the man was killed, making it difficult for motorists to spot pedestrians. He also indicated that the lack of a crosswalk at the intersection makes it more dangerous.

He is not the only resident concerned about this area. Another man who often rides a bicycle revealed that he is also concerned about the lack of a crosswalk. The report mentions that other community members say the intersection is busy and can be dangerous when trying to cross the street.

The police say that it is important to cross at the nearest designated crosswalk when possible. If no crosswalk is present, pedestrians should cross where a crosswalk would be if one existed, or as one lieutenant said, "in between intersections."

Those who have lost a loved one can seek change by voicing their concerns to city officials. A personal injury attorney may also be able to help the bereaved find justice for the one they have lost.
