Things you can do to drive safely in snowy conditions

As one of our Illinois readers, it's safe to assume that you're familiar with the winter weather that can hit our area at any time.

While there are steps you can take to prepare for this, you can only do so much from a safety perspective. This is particularly true as a driver, since you don't have any control over what other people are doing.

If you find yourself behind the wheel during a snow storm this winter, here are some safety tips that can give you peace of mind:

  • Drive slowly. Even if it takes you longer to reach your destination, you need to slow down and take your time. The faster you drive the better chance there is that you will be part of an accident.
  • Don't accelerate too quickly. If you do this, you will lose traction with the road, which makes it a challenge to stay in your lane of travel.
  • Don't stop abruptly. This isn't always possible, but you should avoid it at all costs. Stopping quickly could lead to skidding and a crash.
  • Don't stop when climbing up a hill. Again, this isn't always possible, but it's something you should attempt to avoid. If you stop, you may not be able to get enough traction to start back up.

Even though the above tips can help keep you safe when driving in snowy conditions, you shouldn't take a risk unless you have to. In other words, stay home if you are able to do so.

If you venture out in the snow and are part of a motor vehicle accident, move to safety and call 911. Don't do anything until help arrives, especially if you are dealing with an injury.

Once you receive treatment, take the time to learn more about the cause of the crash and the role of the other driver. This could lead you to focus more time on your legal rights, as you find that the other person was responsible for causing the accident.
