As one of our Illinois readers, you may have some experience with driving in foggy conditions. Regardless of the time of year or time of day, you know that fog can move into the area.
Unfortunately, if you find yourself on the road, you’ll soon come to realize that it’s a challenge to remain safe. The reason for this is simple: You can’t see where you are going.
On the flip side, there are some things you can do to drive safely in foggy conditions. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you’re behind the wheel:
- Use your headlights. Not only does this illuminate the road ahead, but it can help others see your vehicle. Don’t use your high beams, as the reflection can make it more difficult to see.
- Slow down. Even if you do nothing else, you’ll want to follow this important safety tip.
- Use the lane lines to guide you. If you can’t see far ahead of your vehicle, watch the lane lines to ensure that you are in the right place on the road.
By following these tips, you’ll find it much easier to avoid trouble when driving in foggy conditions. However, you need to remember that other drivers won’t take the same care as you. They’ll ignore the fog, assuming that they’ll reach their destination without incident.
If one of these people strikes your vehicle, call 911 and stay where you are. You don’t want to do anything that can further jeopardize your safety.
Once you receive treatment and know what went wrong, you can then learn more about your legal rights.
