Trucking safety in winter

The winter months can present new dangers to any driver, but they can be extremely hazardous to truck drivers that are carrying heavy loads. Every year, there are countless accidents and fatalities due to the winter weather and unprepared truck drivers.

As a truck driver, it is vital that you are constantly seeking to improve on your driving habits so that you are always driving safely, whatever the weather.

Keep away from the pack

On highways, there are very often groups of vehicles that keep the same speed and travel in close distance to each other. As a truck driver, it is important that you avoid doing this, since a serious collision can occur if one car brakes unexpectedly. This can be disastrous when the roads are icy or if the weather is extreme.

Avoid taking the shoulder

When you want to take a break or need to maintain your vehicle, stopping on the shoulder may be tempting due to convenience. It is best to avoid this whenever possible, especially in extreme weather. This is because low visibility can mean that other drivers mistake the shoulder for a driving lane, and a collision can possibly occur.

Maintain a safe speed

Speed is a contributing factor in many accidents. Therefore, it is vital that you keep a safe speed, especially when there are icy roads or there is low visibility.

If you have been involved in a weather-related accident as a truck driver, it is important that you understand exactly how the law applies to you. You should make sure to take action as soon as possible so that you understand your rights.
